Teamwork is essential for successful health care delivery and is a key component of the HOSA program. The program’s mission is to promote career opportunities in health care and improve health care service delivery worldwide. Future health care professionals at Ohio State University embody teamwork from the very first day of their education. They engage in activities with students from seven health sciences colleges, including the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences. These students form teams called Interprofessional Practice and Education, which promotes collaboration and develops leadership skills.
Students learn about each other through collaboration on fictional patient cases. A fourteen-year-old girl, Ellie, has frequent headaches and lack of appetite. Her parents are having trouble communicating her symptoms to a clinician. Students aspiring to become doctors, dentists, pharmacists, and dietitians contribute their knowledge about their specific fields to diagnose Ellie’s condition and develop a treatment plan. The collaborative efforts of the students are invaluable.
Students can explore the various careers in health care through a series of classes that meet the requirements of the state of Nebraska. Students are also trained to use Stop the Bleed techniques in emergency situations. There are a variety of other opportunities to become a future health care professional.

Whether they are using telehealth, virtual reality, or artificial intelligence, these skills can enhance future health care work. They can act as an intermediary to help clarify needs, identify bugs, and ensure that new technologies are safe and reliable. This is why a strong understanding of health information technology is an important skill for health care professionals. As the world’s population grows, so does the need for healthcare workers. Population growth and aging increase the number of people who require health care, and the pipeline of future workers isn’t large enough to meet the demand. In fact, 76 countries have less than one physician per thousand population and nearly three billion people lack access to health professionals. According to a study, the US will need 122,000 physicians by 2032, and this gap is likely to grow even larger. This demand will create ample opportunities for medical careers and will further challenge healthcare organizations in the coming years.
